Nepali Youth for Climate Action together with Clean Energy Nepal and the Department of Environment organised a rally ‘Rise for Climate: Walk for Renewable Energy’ in Lalitpur on the occasion of Global Day of Action today.

The rally, which commenced from Lagankhel and ended at Jawalakhel, tried to highlight a fast, fair and just transition to 100 per cent renewable energy and an immediate end to new fossil fuel projects.

About 250 students and youth participated in rally holding placards with slogans calling for fossil free world and demanding that local leaders commit to building a fossil free world that puts people and justice before profits.

The key highlight of the rally was the demo of an electric bus and some cyclists demanding eco-friendly means of transportation.

Rise for Climate Action is a global movement organised by hundreds of local leaders and dozens of partners focusing on Global Climate Action Summit going to be held next week in California.

SanjuShrestha, network coordinator of Nepali Youth for Climate Action, said, “It’s time to re-power our communities with clean, renewable energy from the sun, earth, wind and water. We need every local government and institution to commit to building 100 per cent renewable energy and stopping new dirty energy projects in their community,” she said.

RajanThapa, programme manager of Clean Energy Nepal, said youth were the power of change and hence they should raise their voice for positive change.

Bhupendra Sharma, an environmentalist at the Department of Environment, said people should bring change in their daily behaviour to end the use of fossil fuel.
