Kathmandu Metropolitan City has started installing solar advertising dustbins at different places of Kathmandu.

As many as 12 solar-powered dustbins have been installed along the Maitighar-Baneshwor road section and Tinkune-Airport road section, according to KMC officials.

These solar dustbins come with a display board and occupy an area of eight square feet to nine square feet.

KMC officials claimed that they were planning to install around 60 such dustbins along the Singha Durbar-Bhadrakali-Tundikhel-Ranipokari route and New Road-Basantapur road section in the coming days.

KMC officials also stated that two sets of dustbin would be used to dump organic and solid waste separately.

A group of college students who were standing beside a solar dustbin installed at Babarmahal expressed doubt about the utility of these dustbins and said that maintenance of these dustbins would be a challenging task for KMC.

The solar-powered advertising dustbins were bought at Rs 500,000 to Rs 700,000 each depending on their size, according to KMC.

KMC claimed that the dustbins will show time, temperature of the area, and pollution level. These dustbins are equipped with mobile charging ports. However, KMC has still not installed the device that shows pollution level.

KMC had declared it would install solar-powered dustbins two years ago.
