Electricity leakage towards distribution drops to 7.99%

Electricity leakage towards distribution has been limited to 7.99 per cent during the first seven months of the current fiscal year.

The Nepal Electricity Authority has reduced the cumulative loss towards distribution by 1.66 percentage points during mid-February this year compared to the same period last fiscal year. The progress was made because of the campaign launched to ensure regular electricity supply and control technical and non-technical leakages on a regular basis.

Electricity leakage towards distribution till mid-February last year was 9.65 per cent.

In the fiscal year 2021/22, the overall electricity leakage towards distribution was 10.86 per cent.

The overall power leakage of the system has been limited to 12.59 per cent, including 4.60 per cent of transmission side till mid-February, this year. By the end of last fiscal year 2021/22, the electricity leakage of the entire system was 15.38 per cent.

By mid-February of the current fiscal year, around 5.27 billion units of electricitywere sold out of around 5.73 billion units of electricity received in the distribution system.

Around 45.8 million units of electricity had leaked.

The largest part of the electricity leakage in the system is towards distribution.

In the current fiscal year, the Authority has set a target to reduce leakage of the overall system to 14 per cent and the distribution leakage to 8.5 per cent.

Managing Director of NEA Kul Man Ghisingh said that even though there was some increase in leakage in the Terai area in the summer, the measures taken for controlling technical and non-technical leakages are being made more effective to reduce the leakage below the target set for this year.

Ghisingh said, “The NEA is forwarding a campaign for resealing the meters kept at the customers’ houses, cutting the lines of the customers who do not pay the dues, cutting the lines of the customers who are in the black list, random meter readings, regular monitoring and taking action to control the theft of electricity through hooking.”

Leakage of Madhes Province drops to 11.78 %

Among the distribution centres under the Authority’s seven regional offices and two provincial division offices, the Madhes Province Regional Office, Janakpur, which has the highest electricity leakage, has reduced the leakage to 11.78 per cent.

The overall power leakage of 23 distribution centres under Janakpur Regional Office till mid-February last year was 12.30 per cent, but this year it has been reduced to 11.78 per cent.

Malangawa distribution centre of Sarlahi has the highest 40.97 per cent power leakage.

The electricity leakage of Simraungadh distribution centre in Bara is 38.39 per cent. Last year, the leakage of that centre was 39.34 per cent.

The leakage of Gaur distribution centre in Rautahat was 30.52 per cent last year and 32.47 per cent this year.

The overall electricity leakage of 24 distribution centres under Koshi Regional Office Biratnagar till mid-February is 8.17 per cent. In the same period last year, the leakage was 10 per cent.

Rangeli distribution centre in Morang has the highest power leakage of 19.95 per cent under the regional office. The electricity leakage of this center is 19.95 per cent. Electricity leakage was 16.05 per cent in the same period last year.

The overall power leakage of 6 distribution centres under Provincial Division Office Hetauda under Bagmati Province was 4.63 per cent till mid-February last year and 5.99 per cent during the same period this year.

Palung distribution centre of Makwanpur has the highest power leakage of 24.69 per cent under the division office. Last year, the centre had 29.75 per cent leakage.

The overall electricity leakage of 12 distribution centres under the Regional Office Pokhara under Gandaki Province came down to 7.25 per cent during the review period.

The highest leakage under the office is from the Tatopani distribution centre in Myagdi. The leakage of the centre increased to 32.67 per cent this year.

The overall electricity leakage of 11 distribution centres under the regional office Butwal under Lumbini Province is 6.96 per cent. The highest leakage under the office is 21.33 per cent in Palpa distribution centre.

Power leakage of seven distribution centres under the Regional Office Surkhet of Karnali Province is 15.74 per cent. The leakage of the centre was 23.90 per cent last year and increased to 36.46 per cent this year.

The overall power leakage of 12 distribution centres under the Regional Office Attaria under Sudurpaschim Province till mid-February is 7.16 per cent.

Bajhang distribution centre has the most leakage under the office. The leakage of the centre which was 21.20 per cent last year dropped to 20.91 per cent this year.
