Copper ores have been found in Musikot Municipality, specifically in Wards 8 and 10, of Western Rukum district.

A survey team from the Department of Mines and Geology has confirmed the presence of copper in the area after initial tests on the copper mines.

Sounak Bhandari, a geologist from the Department, who has been conducting the survey, reported that copper was identified during the exploration in Kitni and Ghorkhani of Ward-8 as well as in Khanidanda and Galampati of Ward-10.

To further examine the quality of the copper, samples have been collected to carry out necessary tests, he added.

Bhandari said further examination was needed to determine the potential use of the discovered copper.

“A comprehensive study will be conducted next year, involving the Department’s team to assess the quantity of copper reserves underground,” he said.

A team of experts, which was facilitating Musikot Municipality-10 also, carried out tests on other ore reserves, including iron, limestone, and other minerals. The team has also discovered that the village is dotted with limestone (Chundhunga) and Khari (granite) mine.

Chairman of Ward-10 Dhan Bahadur Khadka clarified that the examination and extraction of mines and minerals fell under the jurisdiction of the federal government.

A team of experts has already carried out preliminary tests. The team is scheduled to arrive next year for detailed examinations and excavation, said Bhandari.

A team of geologist Bhandari and geographer Basant Adhikari has reached the district to conduct the initial tests.

Khadka recalled previously locals used to dig for copper mines from the same places until a fatal accident took place during extraction.

Since then the extraction has been restricted.

The Department of Mines and Geology had been called upon to verify the presence of copper, and the preliminary findings indicated positive results.

Copper mining pits are found in many corners of Sanibheri and Athbiskot in Rukum West.
