Mugu district of Karnali State is connected to the national electricity system (grid).
The Nepal Electricity Authority tapped the 33 KV transmission line from Kalikot to Jumla at Nagma and built an 85 km line that brought electricity to Gamgad, Mugu’s headquarters.
From Sunday, the authority began distributing electricity to Gamgad and other areas via the national transmission line.
The authority had been supplying electricity to Mugu headquarters Gamgadi and neighboring areas by using electricity generated by Gamgad’s modest hydropower project with a connected capacity of 400 kilowatts. With the installation of the national transmission line in Mugu, power from the national grid has now reached 76 of the 77 districts.
Only the Karnali State district of Humla has yet to be connected to the national transmission line. The contract agreement at Humla has been completed, and the survey to connect it to the national transmission line is underway.
According to Kulman Ghising, executive director of the authority, the power supply problem in Mugu caused by the shutdown of local hydroelectric facilities will be resolved once the authority reaches the national transmission line. He stated that now that the national transmission line has been completed, the electrification process will be hastened.
Currently, there are 3,500 household customers of the authority in Mugu.
The Gamgad small hydropower facility was destroyed by strong rains in October of last year, and electricity production was halted. The authority instantly erected a diesel generator and turned on the power. Flooding and landslides caused by heavy rain destroyed about 700 meters of the power plant’s 1100-meter-long canal in Chayannath Rara Municipality-4.
Similarly, the substation structures of the powerhouse were also damaged by the flood. Reconstruction and repair of canals damaged by floods and hydroelectric power plants were put into operation.
Shambhu Kusiat Yadav, head of the authority’s Karnali State office, said that the 33-11 KV substation and 11 KV line are being upgraded to 33 KV in Gamgad to make the power supply of Mugu reliable and quality. |
