In a move to ensure that the electromagnetic radiation (EMR) generated by the radio frequencies of mobile towers remains within established standards and does not pose health risks to citizens, the Nepal Telecommunication Authority (NTA) is set to conduct EMR measurements.

The NTA's plan involves assessing the EMR emitted by mobile tower equipment in various urban and rural areas and determining if the levels comply with NTA's standards. Min Prasad Aryal, the Director of the Standardization Division at NTA, explained that these measurements will facilitate the identification and rectification of issues related to non-compliant towers. This initiative is aligned with the NTA's "Regulations on Public and Professional Safety from Radiation Generated by Radio Frequency of Mobile Towers."

The NTA intends to focus on monitoring towers located near hospitals and schools to prevent EMR emissions exceeding established standards. This initiative will encompass all operators' towers and cover the frequency bands of 900 to 1800 MHz, 2100 MHz, 2300 MHz, and 2500 MHz.

By conducting these tests, the NTA aims to mitigate potential health risks related to tower-generated radiation and ensure adherence to regulatory measures. Min Prasad Aryal noted, "In previous assessments conducted in various areas, including Kathmandu, Pokhara, and Dang, we identified issues with some towers and implemented necessary improvements. We have a program for further measurements this year as well."
