US technology and e-commerce giant Amazon.com Inc (NASDAQ:AMZN) on Tuesday announced it has expanded its renewable power procurement in India by contracting a 198-MW wind project in Maharashtra.

The tech giant, which is already the world’s largest corporate purchaser of renewable energy, has clinched a deal to buy electricity from an unspecified project in Osmanabad, bringing its portfolio of power purchase agreements (PPAs) in the country to 1.1 GW. With the latest arrangement, it has now committed to buying green power from 50 wind and solar projects across India, including 43 rooftop solar arrays, the output of which will go for its data centres, logistics facilities, physical stores and corporate offices.

" Amazon’s wind and solar projects will help power the company’s operations with 100% renewable energy by 2025, while also bringing jobs and economic benefits to local communities,” said Abhinav Singh, vice president of Operations at Amazon India.

Amazon noted that the wind and solar farms it has contracted in India have helped generate around USD 349 million (EUR 329.8m) in economic investment between 2014 and 2022. Last month, the US group added more than 1 GW of clean energy capacity to the portfolio of renewable energy projects backing its European operations.
