An MoU was inked between NHPC and Rastriya Prasaran Grid Company Limited (RPGCL) to establish grid connectivity for the 750 MW West Seti Hydroelectric Project in Nepal. The signing ceremony was held on May 13, 2024, in Kathmandu, Nepal.

Sh Shakti Bahadur Basnet, Hon’ble Minister of Energy, Water Resources and Irrigation of the Government of Nepal, Sh Sushil Chandra Tiwari, Secretary (Energy), Sh Suman Sekhar, First Secretary (Commerce) of the Indian Embassy in Kathmandu, Sh Sandeep Mittal, Head of NHPC Nepal Projects, and other senior officers from the Government of Nepal attended the ceremony.

The MoU was signed by Sh Prakash Chand Upadhyay, Head of Project (West Seti & SR6 HE Projects) and Dr. Netra Prasad Gyawali, CEO of RPGCL.

The 750 MW West Seti Project will be constructed on the Seti River in Far-west Nepal. The dam site will be located 82 kilometers (km) upstream of the confluence of the Seti and Karnali rivers.

All project sites, excluding the reservoir area and transmission line corridor, will be located in Doti and Dadeldhura districts. While the reservoir will be located in Baitadi and Bajhang districts, the transmission line corridor will be situated across Doti, Dadeldhura, Kailali, and Kanchanpur districts.

The project is expected to generate about 3.4 billion units of electricity per year.

The MoU between NHPC and RPGCL is a significant development for the West Seti Hydroelectric Project. The MoU will provide for the construction of a transmission line from the project site to the Nepal national grid. This will allow the electricity generated by the project to be supplied to Nepal’s national grid.

The signing of the MoU is a positive step forward for the development of the West Seti Hydroelectric Project. The project is expected to play a major role in meeting Nepal’s growing demand for electricity.
