Mohmand Dam remains on track for completion in 2026-27 as construction progresses on key project sites. WAPDA Chairman, Engr Lt Gen Sajjad Ghani (Retd), visited the project to assess ongoing work on the spillway, upstream and downstream cofferdams, diversion tunnels, powerhouse, and power intake.

Project officials, including the General Manager/Project Director, consultants, and contractors, briefed the Chairman on construction targets and achievements. Concreting on the spillway is ahead of schedule, and the downstream cofferdam has reached its design height. The upstream cofferdam is expected to reach its full elevation of 414m above mean sea level by April. Excavation work continues for the main dam pit, side slopes, power tunnel, penstocks, and manifold/shaft access tunnels. Rock support work and excavation for the irrigation tunnels are also underway, along with construction on the left-side main canal.

Later, the Chairman chaired a progress review meeting at the project office, discussing quarry development, large-scale triaxial machine testing, and electrical and mechanical (E&M) design and manufacturing. Emphasizing the importance of quarry development for the main dam, he urged contractors to allocate additional resources. He also instructed project management, consultants, and contractors to meet project deadlines without compromising quality standards.

Mohmand Dam is being built on the Swat River in Mohmand District, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. It is the world’s fifth-highest concrete-face rock-fill dam and is a multipurpose project. With a gross storage capacity of 1.29 million acre-feet (MAF), it will irrigate 18,233 acres of new land in Mohmand and Charsadda and supplement irrigation for 160,000 acres of existing farmland. The dam’s installed power capacity is 800MW, generating 2.86 billion units annually. It will also supply Peshawar with 300 million gallons of drinking water per day.
