Tata Power has secured approval from the Maharashtra Electricity Regulatory Commission (MERC) to establish a 100 MW battery energy storage system (BESS) in Mumbai. The project, set to be completed within the next two years, aims to enhance energy management in the region.

The company plans to deploy the system across 10 locations, primarily near key load centers in Mumbai Distribution. Centralized monitoring and control will be managed from Tata Power’s Power System Control Center. This setup ensures efficient oversight and coordination of the storage system’s operations.

The BESS is designed to address peak load demands, maintaining a stable power supply during periods of high usage. By storing energy when costs are low and releasing it during expensive peak hours, the system will help lower electricity procurement expenses. This approach supports cost-effective energy distribution for consumers.

Additionally, the facility will provide essential support services, such as frequency regulation and voltage stabilization, contributing to a more reliable power grid. It will also optimize solar energy use by capturing excess power generated during the day and supplying it when demand rises, improving renewable energy integration.

Tata Power emphasized that the BESS will connect with its Distributed Energy Resource Management System. This integration is expected to boost operational performance and streamline energy distribution across the network.

The initiative reflects a strategic effort to modernize Mumbai’s energy infrastructure. By combining advanced storage technology with existing systems, Tata Power aims to meet growing electricity needs while promoting efficiency and sustainability. The project’s completion over the next two years marks a significant step in strengthening the region’s power supply framework.
