NTPC Limited, an Indian energy company, has begun operating a 50 megawatt (MW) solar power project in Sri Lanka, as announced in a recent statement. This initiative, with potential to expand to 120 MW, reflects NTPC’s strategy to extend its operations into neighboring countries. The solar facility is being developed through Trincomalee Power Company Limited (TPCL), a joint venture equally shared between NTPC and Sri Lanka’s Ceylon Electricity Board (CEB). With an estimated investment of $100 million, this collaboration aims to strengthen Sri Lanka’s energy infrastructure. The project’s first phase, covering the 50 MW capacity, is now underway, supported by key agreements.

TPCL has secured a power purchase agreement with CEB, ensuring the sale of electricity generated, alongside an implementation agreement with the Sri Lankan government for Phase I. These contracts provide a solid foundation for the project’s execution and long-term operation. The initiative is designed to deliver clean energy while aligning with broader environmental goals.
