Unit 1 of the Qinshan Phase III Nuclear Power Plant in Zhejiang Province, China, was shut down after 738 days of continuous operation, setting a national record for the longest uninterrupted run of a power reactor and a global record for a Candu-6 reactor, as reported by the China National Nuclear Corporation (CNNC).

Qinshan Phase III Units 1 and 2 utilize Candu-6 pressurized heavy water reactor technology supplied by Atomic Energy of Canada Limited. Construction began in 1997, with Unit 1 starting operations in September 2002 and Unit 2 in April 2003. These reactors are designed to be refueled without shutting down, enabling extended operational cycles.

During its latest cycle, starting April 24, 2023, Unit 1 generated over 12.5 terawatt-hours of electricity, equivalent to reducing standard coal consumption by 3.8 million tonnes and cutting carbon dioxide emissions by 9.97 million tonnes. This significant output underscores the reactor’s role in supporting clean energy production and reducing environmental impact.

CNNC highlighted the achievement as a milestone for China’s nuclear energy sector, demonstrating the reliability and efficiency of the Candu-6 technology. The global record for continuous nuclear plant operation remains with India’s Kaiga Unit 1, a pressurized heavy water reactor, which ran for 962 days until December 31, 2019.

As Qinshan Phase III Units 1 and 2 approach the end of their initial 30-year design life, the operator, Third Qinshan Nuclear Power Company, is preparing a refurbishment program. This initiative will upgrade the reactors and fuel channels, extending their operational life by an additional 30 years. The refurbishment ensures the continued contribution of these units to China’s energy needs with enhanced safety and performance.
