India Launches Unit 1 of Ghatampur Thermal Power Project

India has initiated operations at the Ghatampur Thermal Power Project in Kanpur Nagar district, Uttar Pradesh, with the commissioning of its first 660-megawatt (MW) unit. The project, with a total capacity of 1,980 MW, is managed by Neyveli Uttar Pradesh Power Ltd (NUPPL), a joint venture between NLC India Limited, holding a 51% stake, and Uttar Pradesh Rajya Vidyut Utpadan Nigam Limited (UPRVUNL), with a 49% share.

The Ministry of Coal stated: “The project is a flagship initiative by NUPPL, a collaboration of NLC India Limited and Uttar Pradesh Rajya Vidyut Utpadan Nigam Limited.” Valued at INR 21,780.94 crore, the project includes three supercritical thermal power units, each with a capacity of 660 MW. The remaining two units are slated for completion by the fiscal year 2025-2026.

A power purchase agreement allocates 1,487.28 MW to Uttar Pradesh and 492.72 MW to Assam, pending the transfer of a 20% equity share in NUPPL from UPRVUNL to the Government of Assam. This arrangement ensures the efficient distribution of generated power to meet regional energy demands.

The Ghatampur project incorporates advanced environmental technologies to minimize its ecological footprint. It employs Selective Catalytic Reduction and Flue Gas Desulphurization systems to control emissions effectively. Additionally, a zero liquid discharge system is implemented to prevent water discharge, enhancing the project’s sustainability.

This initiative underscores India’s commitment to expanding its energy infrastructure while adopting environmentally responsible practices. The collaboration between NLC India Limited and UPRVUNL strengthens regional energy security, supporting both industrial and residential needs in Uttar Pradesh and Assam.

The launch of the first unit at Ghatampur marks a significant step in meeting India’s growing energy requirements. The project’s advanced technologies and efficient design position it as a model for sustainable power generation. As the remaining units come online, the facility is expected to play a key role in bolstering the nation’s power supply.

By integrating cutting-edge systems and fostering partnerships, the Ghatampur Thermal Power Project contributes to India’s energy goals. It reflects a balanced approach to development, combining robust infrastructure with measures to protect the environment, ensuring long-term benefits for the region.
