The transmission line network in Nepal’s electricity system has reached 6,760 circuit kilometers.

According to the annual progress report for fiscal year 2024/25 made public by the Nepal Electricity Authority on Sunday, 253 circuit kilometers of transmission lines were added within one year.”

“Across the country, 2,034 circuit kilometers of transmission lines are currently under construction. The capacity of transmission line substations has reached 14,123 MVA. According to the Authority’s data, 1,073 MVA was added in the last fiscal year. Substations with a capacity of 6,338 MVA are under construction.”

“On the distribution side, in the last fiscal year, 14 new 33/11 kV substations with a total capacity of 473 MVA were added. An additional 9,336 circuit kilometers of lines were installed. In this way, the total length of distribution lines across the country has reached 218,066 circuit kilometers. Within one year, 3,151 distribution transformers were added.”

Currently, transmission lines including Bahrabise–Kathmandu and Hetauda–Dhalkeber are under construction. Transmission lines planned for advancement include New Butwal–Lamahi, Lingla–Dudh Koshi–Dhalkeber, Arun Hub–Inaruwa, New Khimti–Dhalkeber, and Lapsi–Tinpipley. For cross-border electricity exchange with India, the Inaruwa–New Purnia and Dodhara–Bareilly transmission lines are being built.

On the China side, there is the Chilime–Rasuwagadhi–Kerung transmission line. The Authority has stated that these transmission lines will be important in meeting the target of exporting 15,000 megawatts of electricity by 2035, as well as achieving the goal of exporting 10,000 megawatts of electricity to India within the next 10 years.”
