Nepal imported electric vehicles (EVs) worth Rs 31.55 billion during the first 11 months of the current fiscal year 2024/25, according to data from the Department of Customs.

A total of 13,492 units of electric cars, jeeps, and vans entered the country from mid-July 2024 to mid-June 2025. The government collected Rs 19.57 billion in revenue from these imports.

In a one-month period from mid-May to mid-June (Jestha), 3,633 EVs were imported through various customs points, as importers rushed to bring in vehicles ahead of the budget announcement.

Compared to the same period last fiscal year (FY 2023/24), EV imports increased by 2,026 units. Last year, 11,466 EVs worth Rs 29 billion were imported during the 11-month period, generating Rs 13.06 billion in revenue.

This year, the monetary value of total vehicle and parts imports reached Rs 101 billion, with customs revenue collection amounting to Rs 74.48 billion.

By mid-April, Nepal had imported 9,859 EVs worth Rs 82.24 billion with an additional 3,638 vehicles worth Rs 1.9 billion imported in the following month.

China remained the top source of EV imports. The breakdown shows 7,354 units with vehicle capacities between 50 to 100 kilowatts, 4,728 units with up to 50 kilowatts, 1,354 units between 101 to 200 kilowatts, 41 units between 201 to 300 kilowatts, and two units over 300 kilowatts.

Imports of EVs for public transportation also surged. In the first 11 months of this fiscal year, 3,132 units of such EVs worth Rs 9.48 billion were imported - 1,846 units more than the previous year. The government collected Rs 2.11 billion in revenue from the import of these vehicles.
