Minister for Energy, Physical Infrastructure, and Transport Kulman Ghising said that proactive government measures and public alertness significantly minimized human casualties during the recent floods and landslides triggered by continuous rainfall across the country.

Speaking at a press conference in Kathmandu on Sunday, Minister Ghising stated that while the monsoon rains caused widespread physical and infrastructural damage, the government’s early warnings and preparedness prevented large-scale human loss.

“Thanks to timely alertness and coordination among all agencies, there have been no major human casualties due to flooding,” said Minister Ghising. “However, Ilam district experienced heavy rainfall of 351 millimeters, resulting in severe landslides and loss of life. Apart from that, other regions reported minimal human casualties.”

The minister confirmed that several parts of eastern and western Nepal suffered landslides, road blockages, and damages to bridges and public properties, adding that the government has prioritized reconstruction and rehabilitation in the affected areas.

Ghising noted that road clearance work is progressing rapidly, especially in the western region, while rainfall continues in the east. “We are working to reopen roads immediately in the west, and the rainfall in the east is likely to subside by tomorrow,” he added.

The Ministry of Energy, Physical Infrastructure, and Transport has mobilized technical teams and heavy equipment to restore connectivity and assess damage to highways, hydropower projects, and public infrastructure.

Minister Ghising emphasized that the recent natural disasters highlight the importance of maintaining early warning systems, inter-agency coordination, and community preparedness to mitigate future risks.
