China has successfully connected Unit 2 of the Zhangzhou Nuclear Power Plant in Fujian Province to the national grid on 22 November 2025, the China National Nuclear Corporation (CNNC) announced. The reactor, based on the domestically developed Hualong One third-generation technology, has begun generating electricity.

The Zhangzhou plant represents the largest Hualong One construction base worldwide. When fully completed, it will comprise six reactors with a combined installed capacity of approximately 7.2 million kilowatts. Each unit is designed to produce over 10 billion kilowatt-hours of clean electricity annually, providing a stable, low-carbon power source capable of meeting the needs of millions of households.

Construction of Unit 2 commenced in September 2020, with first fuel loading completed in October 2025. The reactor will now undergo a series of performance tests before entering full commercial operation.

Unit 1 at the same site has been in commercial service and has already generated more than 8.8 billion kilowatt-hours of electricity safely and reliably, according to Mei Bingyun, chief engineer of China National Nuclear Corporation Zhangzhou Energy Co., Ltd.

The successful grid connection of Unit 2 further demonstrates the maturity and reliability of the Hualong One design, which has been developed for both domestic deployment and international markets. The milestone supports China’s ongoing efforts to expand clean energy capacity and enhance long-term energy security through advanced nuclear technology.
