Buddha Air Executive Chair Birendra Bahadur Basnet has said the ongoing conflict has triggered a fuel crisis, leaving the airline with no option but to implement a minimal increase in airfares while maintaining maximum restraint.

Speaking at a press conference in the capital, Basnet explained that fuel typically accounts for around 40 percent of total operating costs in the aviation sector. However, following recent price hikes, that share has surged to nearly 50 percent.

He added that the appreciation of the US dollar has further driven up expenses, including aircraft parts, maintenance, technical training, and other operational costs.

Basnet noted that, the current circumstances, there is little choice but to wait for fuel prices to stabilize.

He also announced that Buddha Air has fully digitized its Royal Club frequent flyer program. “Buddha Air’s Royal Club is now completely digital. Passengers can enjoy mileage points, discounts, and even free tickets,” he said. “From Baisakh 1, 2083 (April 14), we have transformed the Royal Club frequent flyer program into a fully digital and online system.”

According to the airline, passengers can now redeem accumulated mileage points directly through the mobile app or website to book tickets - something that was previously only available via sales or airport counters.

For example, passengers traveling on non-refundable tickets from Kathmandu to Pokhara can earn 112 mileage points, which can be redeemed for up to Rs 112 in discounts on a return flight.

The airline has urged passengers to mention their Royal Club number when booking tickets through any platform or travel agency to ensure they receive mileage benefits.

Buddha Air stated that the program, which has been in operation for decades, has already benefited millions of members. Passengers can accumulate mileage points through flights and later redeem them for discounts or free tickets for themselves or their family members. The airline also confirmed that mileage points will be awarded even on low-cost tickets.

In addition, Royal Club members can use their mileage points to receive discounts at supermarkets, grocery stores, hotels, resorts, and gift shops. The airline said it is expanding partnerships with various businesses and has invited interested organizations to collaborate.

Buddha Air believes the digital system will make it easier for passengers to access and utilize mileage points and discount benefits after their journeys.
