A sudden shortage of petrol has been reported across most private fuel stations in the Kathmandu Valley immediately after the Nepal Oil Corporation (NOC) reduced fuel prices.

Many petrol pumps have halted sales, displaying boards stating “petrol unavailable.” Several stations have been completely shut, while long queues of vehicles were seen at operational government and selected private pumps

Notably, long lines were also observed at the Nepal Police fuel station in Baneshwor and other outlets still in service.

Reports also indicate that fuel stations in districts outside the Valley have faced similar closures.

The shortage emerged just a day after NOC announced a significant reduction in fuel prices—cutting petrol by Rs 20 per litre, diesel and kerosene by Rs 30 per litre, and liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) by Rs 100 per cylinder.

However, NOC has denied any actual shortage in the market, stating that adequate fuel reserves are available.

NOC spokesperson Manoj Kumar Thakur said some business operators have created an artificial shortage by withholding fuel lifting after learning about the price reduction.

According to him, while fuel supply remains smooth, some dealers have refrained from lifting stock and have falsely claimed shortages at their stations.

The corporation has already begun monitoring and inspection drives, warning that such stations may face strict action, including possible sealing.

The corporation has warned that fuel stations refusing to lift or distribute petroleum products despite availability will be brought under immediate regulatory action.
