The newly completed 33/11 kV Ghyampesal Substation in Bhimsen Thapa Rural Municipality of Gorkha has been successfully charged and brought into operation. The substation, which had remained non-operational for a long time due to local obstruction and Right of Way (RoW) issues, is expected to significantly improve the quality, reliability, and stability of electricity supply in northern Gorkha.

The substation was constructed under the Distribution System Strengthening and Expansion Project of the Nepal Electricity Authority’s Project Management Directorate with joint investment from the Asian Development Bank (ADB) and the Government of Nepal. The project also included the construction of 33/11 kV substations, 33 kV transmission lines, 11 kV feeders, and 400-volt low-tension (LT) distribution lines in several districts, including Doti, Kailali, Rolpa, Kapilvastu, Arghakhanchi, Palpa, Rupandehi, Nawalparasi, Tanahun, Gorkha, and Myagdi.

Nepal Electricity Authority Acting Managing Director Dirghayu Kumar Shrestha said the authority had successfully removed long-standing local obstacles and commissioned the substation. He said around 15,000 people living in six rural municipalities of northern Gorkha will now receive more reliable and higher-quality electricity service.

According to him, electricity generated by the 10 MW Barpak-Daraudi Hydropower Project, which is currently under construction, will also be connected to the Nepal Electricity Authority’s national power system through this substation, further strengthening the regional electricity supply.

Bhimsen Thapa Rural Municipality Chairperson Lok Prasad Banjara described the commissioning of the Ghyampesal Substation as a major achievement for the people of northern Gorkha. He expressed confidence that consumers in the region would finally receive the reliable and quality electricity service they had long awaited. He also said that with the substation now in operation, the electricity load on the Gorkha Bazaar Substation will decrease significantly, reducing power interruptions.

With the commissioning of the Ghyampesal 33/11 kV Substation, a new chapter has begun in the electricity supply system of northern Gorkha. Besides enhancing the reliability of electricity service, the substation is also expected to serve as vital infrastructure for integrating future hydropower generation into Nepal’s national transmission system.
