The flooding of the Bhotekoshi River on Wednesday has caused large losses of life and property in Rasuwa, Nuwakot and Dhading.

The government is giving high priority to search, rescue, relief and rehabilitation operations. In such difficult times, the government has received assistance from various organizations and individuals from within the country and abroad.

So far, some countries, individuals and organizations have already provided help whereas others have announced amounts as commitments for assistance. According to Amrit Lamsal, Joint Secretary at the Ministry of Finance (MOF), the Asian Development Bank (ADB) has committed to provide five million US dollars in budgetary support. It is stated that this amount will be a grant.

The World Bank has announced that it will provide a concessional loan of 137 million US dollars to affected areas. The ministry has stated that this sun will be received once Nepal requests it.

Meanwhile, the American Government has announced it will provide five hundred thousand US dollars in assistance while the Australian government has announced an amount of one million US dollars for assistance. Similarly, ADB will provide 150,000 USD for technical assistance.

In addition, a total of 57.5 tons of humanitarian assistance and essential medicines have been received from the Government of India in 3 phases so far. China and the US will provide humanitarian assistance by Saturday.

According to the MOF, the Chinese Government has announced that it will help with 30 ballybridges in affected areas. Additionally, China will also help with air tight bags for the management of 2000 bodies.

Switzerland has pledged to provide one million Swiss francs to support the management of the United Nations.

The International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) has stated that it will provide assistance of Rs. 18,96,22,000 (12 hundred thousand US dollars) for search, rescue and rehabilitation. Stating that the Red Cross’s volunteer emergency response team has been actively involved in search, rescue, and relief distribution in the affected areas, the IFRC has also urged the public to continue their efforts in disaster response.

The IFRC’s Secretary General Jagan Chapagain has said that financial support has been provided to strengthen disaster response to the Bhotekoshi floods and provide immediate humanitarian assistance. Through his social media, Secretary General Chapagain has stated, “IFRC is ready to mobilize additional support to the community as needed, in coordination with the Nepal Red Cross and national agencies; humanitarian assistance will continue.”

According to the MOF, various national and international non-governmental organisations are providing food, materials for temporary shelters, drinking water and sanitation supplies, health and nutrition supplies and essential equipment for the rescue and relief of those affected by the flood.

Among these, Oxfam has provided 200 hygiene kits and 1,000 Aqua tablets for water purification. Oxfam has stated that it will provide assistance in terms of drinking water, sanitation and hygiene in Rasuwa, Dhading and Nuwakot. Oxfam has also prepared non-food items worth around Rs. 16 million, including temporary shelter and kitchen supplies for emergency use.

DanChurchAid (DCA) Nepal has made 100 pairs of gumboots, 20 pickaxes, 20 shovels, 50 boxes of gloves and 6 boxes of masks available in Dhading. The organisation is making provisions for tents, solar powered lights and food items for families in Dhading and Nuwakot. It is mentioned that the process of purchasing food for 500 families has been initiated and emergency rescue materials including body bags for the management of bodies will be provided.

Save The Children has already distributed 200 non-food relief items in Nuwakot. The organization has an additional 800 items of non-food relief materials available and plans have been made to distribute relief targeting 1,000 households.

The BlinkNow Foundation has made two generators with the capacity of 5.5 kilovolt ampere available in Nuwakot.

Similarly, BBC Media Action has provided three 3.5 kilowatt generators to Radio Langtang in Rasuwa and Radio Chimteshwor and Radio Trishuli in Nuwakot. Employees from BBC Media Action went to Nuwakot to hand over the generators, as well as to assist local media to begin regular broadcasting. The organization also said it is monitoring the situation regarding additional support needed for disaster risk-related communication.

ADRA Nepal will provide temporary housing materials and food relief in Rasuwa, Dhading, and Nuwakot. Helen Keller International has stated it will provide emergency nutrition assistance in Rasuwa, Dhading and Nuwakot. Islamic Relief Nepal will provide non-food items and materials for temporary housing to the affected in Rasuwa and Nuwakot. This includes tarpaulins, P-foam mats, ropes and blankets.

Plan International Nepal is providing drinking water, sanitation and hygiene, non-food items, temporary shelter and kitchen supplies in Rasuwa and Nuwakot. People in Need has provided 140 non-food items, 140 dignity items and 27 tents in the first stage in Rasuwa.

Mercy Corps has stated that it has 200 items of non-food relief supplies in stock for Nuwakot. The organization has stated that it will work on water and sanitation, mental health and psychosocial support, along with non-food items. United Mission to Nepal will provide food and non-food items in Dhading. This includes kitchen supplies, tarpaulins, and blankets.

Handicap International is working in Nuwakot and Rasuwa to provide management, physical rehabilitation, and assistive equipment to the injured. The organization has provided 110 items of non-food supplies and 100 items of various assistive equipment.

Care Nepal has sent emergency relief packages including food, shelter and non-food items to Rasuwa and Nuwakot. These include kitchen supplies, mattresses and other bedding materials, temporary housing materials, family tents, sanitation supplies and childcare supplies. There is also a plan to establish a safe and friendly space for women and children.

According to the MOF, it has been seen that relief supplies to Rasuwa and the nearby affected areas are not only limited to food but also include temporary housing, water purification, sanitation, health and nutrition, protection of women and children, restoration of communication services, rescue equipment, and assistive devices for the disabled and injured.

4.5 billion in relief fund

The Prime Minister Relief Fund started by the government to aid affected individuals and areas is gathering funds from various areas. According to the Office of the Prime Minister and the Council of Ministers, Rs. 4,380,852,252 had already been gathered in the fund by Friday night. Likewise, the office states that 80,318 US dollars (around Rs. 103.8 million) has been gathered in Himalayan Bank and Laxmi Bank.
