The Alternative Energy Promotion Centre (AEPC), under Nepal’s Ministry of Energy, Water Resources and Irrigation, has invited proposals from interested organizations for the purchase of carbon credits generated and expected to be generated through various renewable energy projects.

The centre is offering a total of 234,259 carbon credits for potential buyers.

Issued Carbon Credits

According to a notice issued by AEPC, several carbon credits have already been issued under its renewable energy initiatives.

Under the Small Hydropower Promotion Project, a total of 85,921 carbon credits were issued for the period from October 17, 2017, to December 31, 2020.

Similarly, the Improved Water Mill Promotion Programme generated 11,233 carbon credits between January 1, 2020, and December 31, 2020.

Together, these two projects account for 97,154 issued carbon credits currently available for purchase.

Estimated Carbon Credits in the Pipeline

AEPC has also disclosed details of carbon credits that are currently in the issuance process or are provisionally estimated.

For the period from January 1, 2021, to December 31, 2021, the Small Hydropower Promotion Project is expected to generate 25,000 carbon credits, while the Improved Water Mill Promotion Programme is expected to generate 9,970 carbon credits. These are currently provisionally issued and will be converted into certified credits at a later stage.

In addition, the Eco-Zone Improved Cookstove Project is in the process of issuing 102,135 carbon credits for the period from June 25, 2022, to December 31, 2025.

The estimated and in-process credits total 137,105 carbon credits.

With both issued and anticipated credits combined, the total volume available reaches 234,259 carbon credits.

Organizations interested in purchasing the credits must submit their proposals by 2:00 PM on November 17, 2026.

Interested applicants can submit proposals through AEPC’s official carbon trading portal in accordance with the prescribed terms and conditions.
