Energy ministry unveils ambitious energy roadmap for a thriving Nepal

The Ministry of Energy, Water Resources, and Irrigation has recently unveiled an ambitious and forward-looking energy strategy that aims to transform the power landscape of the nation. With a clear and determined vision for the future, this comprehensive action plan, titled “Energy Development Roadmap and Action Plan 2080,” outlines a roadmap to harness the country’s untapped energy potential.

At its core, this visionary plan sets an audacious target of generating a staggering 28,713 megawatts of electricity within the span of 12 years. This electrifying endeavor is poised to not only meet the burgeoning domestic energy needs but also position the country as a significant player in the regional energy market.

Under the astute coordination of Ministry’s Joint Secretary, Sandeep Kumar Dev, a dedicated working group has meticulously crafted the intricate details of this monumental initiative. Their tireless efforts have not only factored in domestic electricity demand but also the strategic export of power to neighboring countries, such as India and Bangladesh.

Looking into the specifics of this electrifying blueprint, the plan envisions exporting a substantial 10,000 megawatts of electricity to India, fostering stronger regional ties and energy cooperation.

Additionally, it allocates another 5,000 megawatts to Bangladesh, facilitating cross-border energy trade and strengthening bilateral relations. The remaining 13,000 megawatts are earmarked to energize the domestic landscape, supporting the nation’s rapid development and growth.

The plan goes a step further by providing detailed forecasts for electricity sales to neighboring nations. Projections indicate a gradual increase in electricity exports, with an estimated 450 MW to be sold by the fiscal year 2079/80, followed by 600 MW in 2080/81, a substantial leap to 4,000 MW by 2085/86, and culminating in an impressive 15,000 MW by the fiscal year 2091/92.

These numbers underscore the country’s commitment to not only meet its own energy needs but to also serve as a reliable energy partner to its neighbors.

One of the most striking revelations in the report is the projected total demand for electricity by the year 2035, which stands at a formidable 28,713 megawatts. This figure, which includes both domestic consumption and exports to neighboring nations, showcases the scale of the challenge and the vision required to meet it.

In an era of growing energy demands and environmental consciousness, the Ministry has not only focused on the quantity but also the sustainability and cost-effectiveness of these energy projects. By carefully considering the involvement of both the government and the private sector, the plan strikes a balance between economic viability and environmental responsibility.
