Around 100 operating and under construction irrigation projects in various places of Kavrepalanchowk district have been damaged by the floods and landslides triggered by the heavy rainfall of September last week.

According to the Water Resources and Irrigation Division Office, Kavrepalanchowk, 95 irrigation projects (systems) have been damaged in the district by rain-induced disasters.

Engineer and Chief of the Water Resources and Irrigation Division Office, Kavrepalanchowk, Binay Paudel said that the irrigation projects, both operating and under construction, in Roshi Rural Municipality of the district suffered the most due to the floods and landslides on September 27 and 28.

According to the data received by the office, 25 irrigation projects in Roshi Rural Municipality, 13 in Namobuddha Municipality, 12 in Mahabharat Rural Municipality and 11 in Panauti Municipality have been damaged, Paudel said.

Similarly, 11 irrigation projects were damaged in Panchkhal Municipality, seven in Bethanchok Rural Municipality, five in Khanikhola Rural Municipality, six in Dhulikhel Municipality, three in Temal Rural Municipality and two in Mandandeupur Municipality.

He said that they had received only the preliminary data of the damages and they were collecting the detailed data of the irrigation projects damaged by the floods and landslides across the district. He said that the large and multi-year projects as well as small irrigation projects suffered significant damage.

According to the data received by the Water Resources and Irrigation Division Office, the irrigation sector faced a loss worth around Rs. 210 million.

"The details of the damage received in the office are preliminary data, as the data continues to come in, there is a possibility that the number of damaged irrigation projects may increase. We are working to verify the data of the damaged projects.

After the verification of the received data, the actual loss of damage caused by the disasters will be known, said engineer Paudel.
