Govt approves plan to resolve electricity tariff dispute with defaulting industries

Power supply to industries to resume within 24 hours

KATHMANDU, Nov 11: The government has approved a plan to resolve the electricity tariff dispute with industries that failed to settle their bills for power used through dedicated lines.

A dedicated committee has been formed to address the dispute regarding electricity tariffs for customers using dedicated feeders and trunk lines under the leadership of former Supreme Court Justice Girish Chandra Lal. The Ministry of Energy, Water Resources, and Irrigation has been authorized to implement the resolution.

In a Cabinet meeting held at the Prime Minister's residence in Baluwatar on Sunday, the government decided to approve the release of the report submitted by the Inquiry Commission on May 5. The Ministry of Energy, Water Resources, and Irrigation has been authorized to make the report public. This decision was announced by the Minister of Communication and Information Technology, Prithvi Subba Gurung, who is also the government’s spokesperson.

The Cabinet decided that, given the disruption caused to production, revenue collection, and employment due to the suspension of electricity supply to industries, the Ministry of Energy, Water Resources, and Irrigation will arrange for the reconnection of electricity lines to affected industries within 24 hours. This decision was made as the electricity disconnection has had a direct impact on the economy.

The government also decided to recover overdue electricity bills from industries using dedicated and trunk lines within 15 days based on electricity consumption bills.
