The 456 MW Upper Tamakoshi Hydropower Project, built with domestic investment, has halted electricity production for 36 hours.

As the power plant is based on a semi-reservoir system, electricity production has been stopped to clean the infrastructure to ensure full capacity production during peak demand. After sustaining damage from the floods in October, the plant had been generating electricity based on river flow since December 25,2024.

After cleaning the infrastructure, preparations have begun to produce 456 MW of electricity at full capacity for four hours during peak hours, said Purnagopal Ranjit, the manager of the Upper Tamakoshi Hydropower Project. Currently, the hydropower plant, which resumed operations after repairing the flood-damaged sand-settling basin on the left side, is also preparing to bring the sand-settling basin on the right side into operation, he added.

“The scaffolding work is ongoing as the concrete wall between the two sand-settling basins is still under construction,” he said. “Since the consultant has instructed not to remove the scaffolding for 21 days after concreting the wall, we have halted electricity production to clean the remaining scaffolding and other debris, including leftover metal pieces.” He added that electricity production will resume on Sunday evening at 7 PM after completing all the work.
