Sungrow has completed the installation of one of the world’s northernmost battery energy storage systems (BESS), located in Simo, Lapland, less than 100 kilometers south of the Arctic Circle. The project is part of the FRV AmpTank joint venture and is designed to enhance the reliability of Finland’s renewable energy grid.

The energy storage facility consists of 26 Sungrow PowerTitan battery containers, offering a total power output of 30MW and a storage capacity of 60MWh. The system is intended to support the integration of renewable sources such as wind and solar by stabilizing the local power network.

The PowerTitan is a liquid-cooled BESS developed by Sungrow for utility-scale applications. The company noted that the system is capable of maintaining efficient and stable performance even in extreme weather conditions, which is particularly important given the project’s northern location.

The battery units are housed in 20-foot containers, allowing them to be delivered in a pre-assembled state. This approach simplifies logistics and accelerates the installation process.

Hannu Koivusalo, Chairman of AmpTank, explained the reasons for choosing Sungrow for the project: “There were two main reasons why we selected Sungrow. The first was technical reliability. Sungrow’s technology convinced us that it would perform reliably under all conditions. The second key factor was long-term reliability, specifically maintenance, servicing, and related support, where Sungrow offered us a very competitive package.”

The project demonstrates how advanced energy storage technologies can be effectively deployed even in remote and harsh environments, supporting long-term energy transition goals. Sungrow’s involvement in this project highlights its expanding presence in the European energy storage market and its role in enabling stable and reliable renewable energy systems.
