IPPAN Unveils Power Summit 2025 to Boost Nepal’s Green Energy Future

The Independent Power Producers’ Association, Nepal (IPPAN), welcomed media representatives today at a press conference to announce the upcoming Power Summit 2025, a key international event focused on Nepal’s ambitious energy goals. Scheduled for September 17–18, 2025 (Ashoj 1–2), the ninth edition of this flagship summit is organized under the patronage of the Ministry of Energy, Water Resources and Irrigation, with India as the Country Partner through the Embassy of India in Nepal.

Private Sector: Driving Force Behind Nepal’s Hydropower Growth

Since the introduction of the Electricity Act in 1992 (2049 B.S.) and the establishment of multi-party democracy, Nepal’s private sector has played a transformative role in the country’s hydropower development. Currently, private independent power producers (IPPs) generate over 80 percent of Nepal’s total energy supply.

Nepal’s installed capacity has reached 3,602 MW, of which IPPs contribute 2,900 MW. This achievement, realized within just 25 years of private sector participation, has been supported by favorable government investment policies. The private sector has mobilized more than Rs. 1,300 billion in investments so far and aims to invest up to Rs. 5,000 billion going forward.

Currently, projects totaling 4,200 MW are under construction, while another 4,100 MW await financial closure after securing power purchase agreements (PPAs).

Power Summit 2025: “Mission 28,500 MW: Powering Nepal, Energizing Region”

The summit aligns with the government’s advanced Energy Development Roadmap-2081, which targets an additional 25,000 MW of electricity generation within the next decade, bringing Nepal’s total capacity to nearly 28,500 MW by 2035.

Highlighting this dramatic increase—from just 3,600 MW generated over 114 years since the first power plant—the summit emphasizes that achieving these ambitious targets depends heavily on the continued responsibility and active engagement of the private sector.

A Grand International Platform for Energy Collaboration

The Power Summit 2025 will convene over 1,000 participants from more than 30 countries, including:

- Honourable Prime Minister of Nepal

- High-level dignitaries from multiple countries

- Subject matter experts

- Key stakeholders across the energy ecosystem

The summit will gather investors, government officials, diplomats, NGOs, universities, consulting firms, construction companies, banks, insurance companies, and other stakeholders. This diverse assembly will engage in policy debates, share success stories, and exchange experiences aimed at implementing Nepal’s Energy Development Roadmap successfully.

Addressing Regional and Global Energy Challenges

Besides Nepal’s national goals, the summit will focus on pressing regional and international issues, including:

- Enhancing the availability of green and clean energy across Nepal and South Asia

- Promoting electricity and carbon trading markets

- Developing innovative financial instruments for energy projects

- Ensuring energy security and expanding regional connectivity through cross-border infrastructure

- Supporting net-zero emission targets and fostering sustainable, inclusive energy development in South Asia

Policy Dialogue for Climate Resilience and Sustainable Growth

The summit will also address critical policies needed to tackle challenges such as:

- Internal and external infrastructure development

- Increasing energy consumption demands

- Climate change impacts and mitigation strategies

- Reducing damage from natural disasters

The event is expected to produce concrete recommendations that will guide Nepal toward sustainable energy development and strengthen its presence in regional energy markets.

Legacy and Outlook

Following successful editions in 2006, 2007, 2008, 2012, 2013, 2016, 2019, and 2023, Power Summit 2025 aims to reinforce Nepal’s emerging identity as a green energy leader and a key player in the South Asian energy landscape.
