In a milestone achievement for Nepal’s remote infrastructure development, Prime Minister K.P. Sharma Oli today formally inaugurated a Bailey bridge over the Chuwa River in Kharpunath Rural Municipality-5 of Humla district, marking a critical step in connecting Karnali Province with the national road network via the Hilsa–Simikot road section.

The bridge, constructed by the Nepali Army, spans 51.8 meters in length and 4.2 meters in width, with a maximum load capacity of 21 tons, and is designed to facilitate year-round vehicular movement in one of Nepal’s most geographically isolated regions.

Construction on the site began on Chaitra 12, 2081 BS (March 25, 2025 AD). The project was completed through a collaborative effort between the Ministry of Physical Infrastructure and Transport, Karnali Provincial Government, local representatives, and community stakeholders.

Speaking at the inauguration ceremony, Prime Minister Oli emphasized the strategic significance of the bridge for both national security and regional development, particularly as Humla borders China. He also praised the Nepali Army for its role in expanding critical infrastructure in remote, high-altitude territories.

“With this bridge in operation, the Hilsa–Simikot route will be open to vehicular transport in all seasons, reducing isolation and boosting trade, mobility, and emergency response capacity,” said PM Oli.

The project highlights the government’s renewed focus on connecting border districts, enhancing national integration, and promoting inclusive development in the Himalayan belt, which has historically lagged behind due to topographical and logistical challenges.

The inauguration of this Bailey bridge is expected to unlock new economic and social opportunities for the people of Humla and neighboring areas, aligning with broader goals of infrastructure modernization and transport accessibility in rural Nepal.
