The Government of Nepal has decided to formally request China to reopen the Rasuwagadhi-Kerung border by installing a temporary Bailey bridge at the site where the Miteri Bridge was swept away by flash floods on Tuesday.

The decision was made during a meeting of the National Council for Disaster Risk Reduction and Management, held following the massive flood in the Lhendey River that severely damaged the Nepal-China cross-border infrastructure, including the vital Miteri Bridge and parts of the road on the Chinese side.

Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli, who visited the flood-affected area for an on-site assessment, directed the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to coordinate with China for the immediate installation of a Bailey bridge to resume trade and movement through the critical Rasuwagadhi-Kerung border point.

The meeting also decided to initiate diplomatic coordination with China for the reconstruction of the Miteri Bridge and repair of the damaged Chinese road section, aiming to bring the cross-border trade route back into operation as soon as possible.

Furthermore, the government has instructed the Ministry of Physical Infrastructure and Transport to swiftly restore damaged roads and transport infrastructure on the Nepali side and has also decided to begin preparations to open alternative border points with China to ensure continuity in trade.

In response to damages suffered by importers and transporters due to the disaster, the Ministry of Finance has been directed to facilitate the insurance claim process for vehicles, containers, and other goods stranded or destroyed in the flood-hit Rasuwagadhi area.

The Rasuwagadhi-Kerung crossing is Nepal’s second major trade gateway with China, handling more than 60% of automobile imports and playing a vital role in the supply of goods, especially during the festive season. The current disruption has already raised concerns among businesses and consumers alike.
