On August 8, CALB, a leading Chinese lithium battery supplier, and Guangdong GOVY Technology Co., Ltd. ("GOVY"), the flying car division of GAC Group, strengthened their strategic partnership through a new agreement. This collaboration focuses on advancing the electric vertical take-off and landing (eVTOL) sector and aims to standardize power solutions for eVTOL vehicles.

CALB and GOVY have a history of working together, with CALB already supplying the battery for GOVY's AirCab model. The AirCab, launched in June 2025, is powered by CALB's advanced aviation-specific battery, which boasts the highest energy density in the industry. The AirCab has received over 1,000 pre-order intentions, and prototype deliveries began in July. The battery used in the AirCab is a high-nickel/silicon chemistry unit designed for low-altitude mobility. It offers a cell energy density of over 300 Wh/kg and supports fast charging with a 6C rate. CALB's second-generation semi-solid large cylindrical aviation battery, capable of reaching 350 Wh/kg energy density, is also being used in the AirCab.

Currently, the AirCab is undergoing airworthiness certification, with full commercial production and deliveries expected to start in late 2026. According to both companies, this deal highlights GOVY’s confidence in CALB's battery technology and reinforces CALB’s goal of expanding into the flying vehicle market. The partnership aims to align their strategies for the low-altitude economy and create opportunities for wider collaboration on specific aircraft programs.

The companies plan to work together to contribute to national and industry airworthiness standards, pooling resources to make urban air mobility safer and more accessible. This joint effort is part of their long-term vision to support the growth of the eVTOL sector.

CALB’s ambitions in the eVTOL market come as several competitors also target the sector. In April, CATL announced plans to begin mass production of its first-generation condensed matter battery, with applications in both automotive and aviation sectors. Additionally, Sunwoda launched its "Xinyunxiao 1.0" eVTOL-dedicated battery, which offers a 320 Wh/kg energy density, continuous power density of 3,300 W/kg at room temperature, and a 2,000-cycle lifespan. This battery has also passed extreme environment airworthiness tests.
