Solar energy developer Swimsol has completed the installation of a 1,037 kWp SolarSea floating solar system at Fari Campus in the Maldives, adding to the country¡¯s progress in adopting offshore floating solar technology. The system is designed to provide clean energy generation for island communities, contributing to more sustainable energy use.

Swimsol, established by European solar specialists, has focused on developing marine-grade floating solar platforms and corrosion-proof rooftop systems tailored for tropical environments. In 2014, the company introduced what it described as the world¡¯s first marine floating solar platform. Since then, it has delivered projects across the Maldives, with more than 30 MW of solar capacity installed. The company¡¯s solutions are intended to support island regions where land space is limited but energy demand is increasing.

The newly completed SolarSea project at Fari Campus reflects Swimsol¡¯s ongoing efforts to expand floating solar applications in coastal and island settings. By installing large-scale floating solar systems offshore, the company aims to help local communities reduce dependence on imported fuels while increasing renewable energy consumption.

In 2021, Swimsol secured a $14 million (€11.9 million) loan from responsAbility, a Swiss sustainable asset manager, along with the Development Bank of Austria (OeEB). The financing was directed toward advancing floating solar projects in the Maldives and other island states, providing support for the company¡¯s regional expansion. The loan has enabled Swimsol to strengthen its role in delivering scalable clean energy solutions to small island nations.

The company has emphasized that its floating solar systems are built for durability in marine conditions, using corrosion-resistant technology to withstand tropical climates. This design approach ensures reliability and long-term performance, addressing key challenges faced by coastal installations.

Swimsol¡¯s projects in the Maldives illustrate how floating solar technology can be integrated into island energy systems, offering a pathway for cleaner electricity generation. With the completion of the Fari Campus system, the company continues to demonstrate the potential of offshore solar platforms to expand renewable capacity where land-based development options are limited.
