President Dhakal emphasizes the need for a shift in perspective towards the private sector

President Dhakal of the Federation of Nepalese Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FNCCI) stressed the importance of changing the perception of the private sector. During a meeting with the newly elected executive committee of the Society of Economic Journalists Nepal (SEJON) at the FNCCI office, he highlighted the significant role of the private sector as the largest employment provider in the country.

President Dhakal expressed concern about the continuous targeting of the private sector during movements and protests, emphasizing the need to recognize its importance. He called on the media to help create a more informed perspective on this issue, noting that the private sector contributes significantly to Nepal's economy, accounting for 81% of the GDP and 86% of employment.

President Dhakal also mentioned the estimated loss of around NPR 80 billion to the private sector due to vandalism and arson during the recent "JENJ" protests, emphasizing the need for recovery from this challenging situation.

“We have reached this point after facing various political and natural disasters over time. After the JENJ movement on Bhadra 23 and 24 (September 8 and 9), both public and private property have suffered extensive damage. We now face the challenge of recovering from this situation,” he said.

However, he acknowledged that the current government acted promptly to announce relief packages in line with the expectations of the private sector, thereby boosting its morale — an initiative the FNCCI views positively.

He also stated that fact-based, investigative, and responsible journalism can enhance the credibility of the private sector and create pressure for policy reforms, expressing FNCCI’s continued commitment to positive collaboration with SEJON.

FNCCI Senior Vice President Anjan Shrestha remarked that recent events have created a sense of insecurity among industrialists and entrepreneurs, stressing the need to maintain peace and order to boost public and business confidence. He warned that some recent incidents in Nepal have sent negative signals internationally, which could impact employment.

FNCCI Vice President Hemraj Dhakal emphasized the current need for establishing a continuous dialogue mechanism between the government and the private sector, as well as ensuring a conducive environment for businesses to operate openly and confidently, which is essential for economic restoration and good governance.

FNCCI Treasurer Bharatraj Acharya added that the government must work in coordination and cooperation with the private sector to reconstruct, rebuild, and revive Nepal’s economy.

SEJON President Bhagawat Bhattarai stated that SEJON has consistently advocated for open economy, entrepreneurship, and employment through economic journalism. Referring to the long-standing collaboration between FNCCI and SEJON, he emphasized the need to continue this partnership in the future as well.

FNCCI concluded by stressing the importance of creating a favorable environment for joint efforts in economic development, job creation, and innovation amid the evolving political landscape. The Federation urged everyone to understand that the issues it raises are meant to benefit the overall economic development and prosperity of the country.
