  Rains damage embankments, irrigation canals

Due to the torrential rains on October 3 and 4, around 1,500 metres of embankments were washed away in various places by river erosion, floods, and landslides, causing an estimated damage of Rs. 100 million.

According to the Ministry of Energy, Water Resources and Irrigation, the Kankai River has washed away about 200 metres of embankment on the lower right bank of the Postal Highway in Gauriganj Rural Municipality-2, Jhapa.

This has inundated about 114 households in Hokalbari village and damaged paddy planted in 500 hectares of land.

In addition, an estimated 200 metres of embankment has been eroded in Kuwadi of Jhapa Rural Municipality-2, damaging about 25 hectares of land. It is estimated that the damage is worth Rs. 7.5 million.

Similarly, the Mechi River has caused damage worth about Rs. 5 million by breaking the embankments in various places.

Likewise, the flood in the Keshaliya River (Budhi Khola) has inundated the settlements of Biratnagar Metropolitan City-6 and 12. About 75 households have been displaced, said the Ministry.

The flood has also damaged the embankment of Pateruwa in Siraha on the eastern bank of the Kamala River. Initial reports indicate that the damage is to the tune of Rs. 2.5 million, said the ministry.

Similarly, the flood has washed away about 60 metres of the embankment in Maryadpur, Maulapur Municipality-1, on the right bank of the Lalbakaiya River. About 100 hectares of paddy fields have been damaged.

Similarly, about 120 metres of the embankment in Boudimai village has been washed away, damaging 200 hectares of paddy fields.

About 200 houses and huts have also been submerged. The initial estimate of the damage is Rs. 6 million, said the ministry.

It is reported that the Ratu River in Mahottari has eroded about 890 metres of embankments in various places.

The Ratu River in Mahottari has washed away 390 metres of embankments in wards 2, 10 and 11 of Balwa Municipality, including Banchauri, Leuri, Bhalni and Bhagawatipur.

In addition, 400 meters of embankments in Loharpatti of Loharpatti Municipality-6, 20 metres in Ratbara of Mahottari Rural Municipality-6, and 80 metres of embankments in Bakhari and Khaira in wards 1, 4 and 7 of Jaleshwor Municipality have been washed away, said the ministry.

In addition, the district headquarters Jaleshwor has also been affected by the floods. The ministry has said that the damage in Mahottari is estimated to be worth Rs. 80 million.

Under the irrigation system, there was no significant damage to the irrigation systems as the gates of the head regulator, undersluice, main canal and branch canals were operated in a timely manner to safely divert the floodwaters from the rivers in the dam area of the irrigation systems, said the ministry.

According to the ministry, Mohammadpur village was inundated due to overflow from the right guide bund of the coastal area 200 metres upstream of the barrage of the Jhanj irrigation system.

It is estimated that the rivers and streams within the irrigated areas of the Sunsari Morang, Bagmati and Narayani Irrigation Projects have eroded cultivable land.

The flood in the Sunkoshi River has inundated the dam site under the Sunkoshi Marin Diversion Multipurpose Project and the condition of the under-construction structures, including the cofferdam is not yet known, the ministry said.
