On November 12, Tesla announced that the 5 millionth battery pack had rolled off the production line at its Shanghai Gigafactory, marking a major milestone for the U.S. automaker’s largest manufacturing hub outside its home market.

Tesla stated that its battery packs, consisting of cells and structural components, are entirely developed in-house - from chemical formulation to system architecture. The company emphasized that the packs are designed for high performance, enhanced energy density, and reliable operation in low-temperature environments. They are built to outlast the vehicles themselves, capable of sustaining more charge cycles than the expected service life of the cars.

The battery packs produced at the Shanghai facility are key components for Tesla’s best-selling models, including the Model 3 and Model Y, both manufactured locally for the Chinese domestic market and for export.

Located in Shanghai’s Lin-gang Special Area and spanning an area of 860,000 square meters, the Gigafactory is Tesla’s first fully owned manufacturing facility outside the United States and the first wholly foreign-owned car production plant in China. Since beginning operations in late 2019, the plant has become an essential part of Tesla’s global production and supply chain network.

This latest achievement follows several milestones previously recorded at the Shanghai site. In July 2024, Tesla celebrated the production of its 10 millionth electric drive unit, which the company described as evidence of its vertically integrated development model and engineering capability. Later that same year, in November, the Gigafactory reached two additional achievements - producing its three millionth vehicle and exporting its one millionth car overseas.

By the end of 2024, annual deliveries from the Shanghai plant exceeded 916,000 vehicles, representing nearly half of Tesla’s global production that year. These results demonstrated the facility’s growing importance as a cornerstone of the company’s international operations and its ability to support both domestic and export demand.

According to the latest figures from the China Passenger Car Association, Tesla sold 61,497 China-made electric vehicles in October 2025. The data reflects the company’s stable market presence and consistent performance in one of the world’s most competitive electric vehicle markets.

The Shanghai Gigafactory continues to serve as a strategic base for Tesla’s regional and global growth, supporting its long-term goals of efficiency, innovation, and sustainability. The milestone of five million battery packs underscores the plant’s strong production capability and its role in advancing large-scale electric vehicle manufacturing.
