Blue Water Intelligence celebrates a significant achievement with the launch of basin-wide hydrological services Across Nepal

Blue Water Intelligence celebrates a significant achievement with the launch of basin-wide hydrological services across Nepal as part of the Nepal-France Green Road Map.

The event included a panel discussion on water and energy security in Nepal in the context of Climate Change. The operational deployment of BWI's hydrological forecasting and early warning services under the Hydro Nepal Project was marked in Kathmandu.

This initiative, launched in February 2025 with support from the French Ministry of Economy, Finance, Industrial and Digital Sovereignty and funded by FASEP, involves collaboration between Nepal and France.

The event brought together key figures from Nepal's water, energy, and research sectors, showcasing technical achievements and partnerships. Speakers included Virginie Corteval, Ambassador of France to Nepal, Hitendra Dev Shakya, Managing Director of Nepal Electricity Authority (NEA), Prof. Deepak Aryal, Vice-Chancellor of Tribhuvan University, Inès Routaboul, Hydro-Nepal Project Manager at Blue Water Intelligence (BWI), Dr. Anil Khanal, Hydrologist at BWI, Asst. Prof. Dibas Shrestha from the Central Department of Hydrology & Meteorology at Tribhuvan University, and Dr. Rakesh Kayastha, a researcher at Tribhuvan University.

Other participants include Dr. Mohd. Farooq Azam, Senior Intervention Manager at ICIMOD, Dr. Vishnu Pandey, Professor at the Institute of Engineering, Tribhuvan University, Man Devi Shrestha, Director General of the Department of Electricity Development (DoED), Sujit Kumar Shakya, CEO of NIC Asia Bank, and Ganesh Karki, President of the Independent Power Producers’ Association Nepal (IPPAN). The Hydro Nepal Project aims to enhance hydropower planning and operations, disaster preparedness, and water resource management by integrating Earth observation, artificial intelligence, and hydrological modeling.

After successfully completing the development phase, river flow forecasting and early warning systems are now operational in the Upper Karnali, Marsyangdi, Trishuli, and Dudh Koshi basins. As a result, BWI is now open for business with the private sector in Nepal. Ambassador Corteval expressed his appreciation for the collaboration between French expertise in hydrological modeling and Nepal's river systems to promote economic growth and disaster preparedness.

Dr. Anil Khanal, BWI’s Hydrologist, highlighted that this milestone demonstrates the impact of international cooperation and digital innovation on advancing Nepal’s water and energy resilience. He emphasized BWI's readiness to expand beyond the initial four basins and establish new partnerships for data-driven river flow forecasts using machine learning for hydropower and river basin management across Nepal.

The event in Kathmandu brought together water stakeholders to launch machine learning-enabled river flow forecasts for hydropower and river basin management in Nepal. The evening concluded with a panel discussion on water, energy, and climate resilience, where government agencies, private sector stakeholders, and researchers explored ways to leverage Basin Intelligence technology to address the country's most critical water-related challenges.
