The Lekhnath–Damauli 220 kV transmission line project has been advanced with the aim of strengthening energy security and improving the reliability of the electricity distribution system.

Under the project, being implemented by the Nepal Electricity Authority in collaboration with the German government, a double-circuit transmission line of approximately 45 kilometres will be constructed, along with modern substations in Lekhnath and Damauli. Co-financed by the German government’s KfW Development Bank, the project is expected to make a significant contribution to Nepal’s energy security by reinforcing the regional electricity network.

In this context, the foundation stone of the project was formally laid on Wednesday at the Damauli substation. The ceremony was jointly led by Nepal Electricity Authority Managing Director Hitendradev Shakya, German Ambassador Udo Volz, and representatives of KfW Development Bank.

With a transmission capacity of 1,000 MW, the project will facilitate the efficient integration of electricity generated from various sources, including the Tanahun Hydropower Project, into the national grid. This is expected to enhance grid reliability and reduce dependence on imported fossil fuels by increasing the share of renewable energy, according to the Tanahun Hydropower Project.

Speaking at the event, Managing Director Shakya said the project would strengthen the country’s overall electricity system by ensuring better balance between generation, transmission and distribution. “The goal of energy security cannot be achieved without strengthening transmission infrastructure. This project will play a decisive role in ensuring a quality, regular and reliable electricity supply,” he said.

The transmission line and the gas-insulated substations to be constructed in Lekhnath and Damauli are expected to minimise technical disruptions in electricity supply, thereby ensuring improved service, particularly for the industrial and commercial sectors.

German Ambassador Volz said that the expansion of reliable transmission infrastructure is essential to meet Nepal’s growing energy demand. He expressed confidence that such projects would contribute to sustainable economic growth by extending clean energy access to households, businesses and industries.

It was also stated at the groundbreaking ceremony that the project would help lay the foundation for the development of electric vehicle charging stations in Pokhara and Damauli in Gandaki Province, as well as support the integration of small hydropower projects into the national grid.
