  Koshi's power touches 901 MW

The total electricity generation capacity of operational energy projects in Koshi Province has reached 901 megawatts.

According to the semi-annual report on economic activities in Koshi Province published by Nepal Rastra Bank (NRB), as of mid-January 2026, 63 hydropower projects completed across various districts of the province have a combined installed capacity of 884.8 MW.

In addition, a grid-connected solar project in Morang is generating 6.8 MW, while Jhapa Energy Limited in Jhapa is producing 10 MW of electricity. During the first six months of the current fiscal year, four hydropower projects with a combined capacity of 113.9 MW were completed and brought into operation.

The installed capacity of hydropower projects operating in Koshi Province represents 21 per cent of the country's total installed hydropower capacity of 4,300 MW. Among the hydropower projects operating in Koshi Province, Solukhumbu District has the highest installed capacity at 339.4 MW.

Similarly, the installed capacity stands at 150.8 MW in Taplejung; 126.7 MW in Ilam; 92.5 MW in Okhaldhunga; 72.9 MW in Panchthar; 66.1 MW in Sankhuwasabha; 17.7 MW in Bhojpur; 11.1 MW in Khotang; 10 MW in Jhapa; 7.5 MW in Tehrathum; and 6.8 MW in Morang.

By district, there are 17 hydropower projects in Ilam, 11 in Sankhuwasabha, nine in Solukhumbu, eight in Taplejung, five in Panchthar, four in Okhaldhunga, three each in Bhojpur and Khotang, and one in Tehrathum.

In addition, one solar power project each is operating in Jhapa and Morang. The report also highlights the progress of the Arun III Hydropower Project and its associated transmission line project.

The combined estimated investment for the two projects stands at Rs. 145 billion. The 900 MW Arun III Hydropower Project, which began in April 2018, is targeted for completion by January 2028.

As of mid-January 2026, the project's physical progress had reached 74 per cent, while financial progress stood at 78 per cent. The project has generated direct employment for 2,931 workers, including 1,682 Nepali nationals and 1,249 foreign workers.

Similarly, the Arun III 400 kV Transmission Line Construction Project, which commenced in February 2020 and is also scheduled for completion by January 2028, has a transmission capacity of 400 kV and a total length of 217 kilometres.

The transmission corridor passes through the districts of Sankhuwasabha, Bhojpur, Khotang, Udayapur, Siraha, Dhanusha and Mahottari.

According to the report, the project's revised physical progress has reached 57 per cent, while financial progress stands at 60 per cent. The transmission line project has provided direct employment to 234 workers, including 100 Nepali and 134 foreign workers.
