The Nepal Electricity Authority (NEA) has brought into operation the 33/11 kV, 6/8 MVA Punarbas Substation built in Punarbas Municipality of Kanchanpur. With the substation now operational, around 18,000 customers under the Belauri distribution center will be directly benefited.

According to NEA Acting Managing Director Dhirghayu Kumar Shrestha, although a contract had initially been signed for the construction of the substation, it was later cancelled after the contractor failed to complete the required electromechanical works beyond the civil structures.

He said that, as the Punarbas area had long been facing problems of low voltage and irregular electricity supply, and continuous complaints were coming from consumers, instructions were issued to immediately arrange an alternative mechanism and complete the substation construction as quickly as possible.

Following this directive, the Belauri Distribution Center utilized 6/8 MVA transformers and necessary equipment available at various NEA offices, and rapidly completed the remaining construction and installation work. The substation was then brought into operation, according to the authority.

Acting Managing Director Shrestha stated that the operation of the substation will make it easier to provide reliable and quality electricity supply to consumers in the Punarbas area. He added that it will significantly improve the quality of electricity supply and also play an important role in managing the growing future demand for electricity.

NEA’s Sudurpaschim Provincial Office led the implementation of the project, and the authority believes it will make the electricity supply system in the Punarbas area more stable, reliable, and effective.

Local consumers are expected to benefit from the resolution of long-standing issues of low voltage and irregular supply. With the operation of the substation, the regional distribution system will be strengthened, and it will also help meet the increasing electricity demand in the coming years.
