Minister for Energy, Water Resources and Irrigation Biraj Bhakta Shrestha has stated that Nepal has reached a position where it can export electricity worth nearly Rs 30 billion.

Addressing the 41st anniversary ceremony of the Nepal Electricity Authority (NEA), Minister Shrestha said that with the development of power generation, transmission, and distribution infrastructure, as well as providing electricity service to millions of households, Nepal has successfully entered the stage of electricity export.

He noted that the role played by the Authority over more than four decades in Nepal’s energy development has been historic.

He said, “At present, we have reached a state where we can export electricity worth around Rs 30 billion. These figures are not just numbers of achievement; they are also proof that Nepal is changing.”

Minister Shrestha mentioned that the role of private sector energy producers, supporting agencies, and all related stakeholders who have been collaborating with the Authority in the energy sector is commendable.

He stated, “From the development of power generation, transmission, and distribution infrastructure to expanding service to millions of households and taking the country into the export phase, the role of private sector energy producers, donor agencies, and related stakeholders collaborating with the Authority is highly praiseworthy.”

He stressed that the achievements made were not possible through the solitary effort of any single individual or agency, but were realized through years of collective concern, reflection, and effort.

Minister Shrestha informed that along with power generation, the government’s priority lies in increasing domestic consumption, strengthening the transmission and distribution system, and expanding external power markets.

He stated that special attention has been focused on the expansion and improvement of transmission infrastructure in the current fiscal year.

He added that as generation increases, if the transmission system capable of bearing high electricity loads remains weak, the power generation itself loses its meaning.

Minister Shrestha said the government is moving forward in the implementation phase after preparing plans with the vision that strategic transmission lines, substations, grid strengthening, and cross-border transmission infrastructure construction must be accelerated.
