The Nepal Electricity Authority (NEA) has started preparations to manage the increase in electricity demand expected during the upcoming dry season (winter), particularly in the Kathmandu Valley and surrounding areas.

A meeting held at the NEA on Tuesday regarding the management of electricity demand and supply during winter decided to accelerate the necessary studies and related work.

Preparations have been initiated because flooding in the Bhotekoshi area of Rasuwa District and the subsequent flooding of the Trishuli River damaged hydropower plants operating in the area, forcing them to halt electricity generation. This has prompted the authorities to begin preparations for managing electricity demand and supply during the coming winter.

The meeting formed a five-member committee under the coordination of the director of the Bagmati Provincial Office to carry out the necessary studies and work for managing winter electricity demand. The committee has been instructed to submit daily progress reports to the Executive Director and immediately report any problems encountered during implementation.

At the meeting, Managing Director Shrestha clarified that although the shutdown of power generation from hydropower plants in the Trishuli River basin has put some pressure on electricity demand and supply management, there will be no load-shedding during the coming winter, nor is there any need for it.
