Nepal has sought investment from Qatar in three major infrastructure and hydropower projects as the two countries prepare to mark the 50th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations.

Nepal’s Finance Minister Dr. Swarnim Waglé made the request during a meeting with Qatar’s Minister of Finance Ali bin Ahmed Al Kuwari in Doha on Tuesday.

Waglé requested Qatari investment in the Chandragiri–Chitlang–Palung–Chitwan Expressway, Nalsing Gad Storage Hydroelectric Project and Simbuwa Khola Hydroelectric Project. The request comes ahead of the 50th anniversary of Nepal-Qatar diplomatic relations, which will begin in January 2027.

During the meeting, Waglé also expressed gratitude to the Qatari government for its support to Nepal following the catastrophic Bhote Koshi flash flood. He requested continued Qatari assistance for reconstruction and rehabilitation efforts.

The Finance Minister also thanked Qatar for providing employment opportunities to the Nepali community, highlighting the importance of the long-standing economic and people-to-people relationship between the two countries.

Qatar’s Finance Minister Al Kuwari said the Qatari government would continue providing support for Nepal’s rehabilitation and rebuilding efforts following the disaster.

Recalling the 2024 state visit of Qatar’s Amir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani to Nepal, Al Kuwari also said Qatar would facilitate investment from the country in the three development projects proposed by Nepal.

The proposed projects cover strategic transport infrastructure and large-scale hydropower development, potentially opening another channel for Qatari capital to enter Nepal’s infrastructure sector.

The meeting was held in Doha in a cordial atmosphere, according to the Embassy of Nepal.

Waglé also held separate meetings with Georgia’s Finance Minister Lasha Khutsishvili and Armenia’s Finance Minister Vahe Hovhannisyan. The meetings focused on matters of mutual interest and avenues for strengthening bilateral economic cooperation.

Later, Waglé visited the Embassy of Nepal in Doha, where Chargé d’Affaires Kumar Rai briefed him on the embassy’s activities and the current state of Nepal-Qatar relations. He also interacted with representatives of the Nepali community in Qatar.
